What we repair

Know what you are looking at

A handful of problems cover nearly every wheel that comes through the workshop. Here is what causes each one, what you will notice on the car, and how we put it right.

Kerb & scuff damage

Usually caused by

  • Parking tight against a high or angled kerb
  • Multi-storey ramps, drive-thru lanes and narrow gateways
  • Low-profile tyres that leave the rim edge unprotected

What you will notice

  • Bright bare-metal scrapes along the outer lip
  • Gouges or flat spots you can catch with a fingernail
  • Lacquer lifting and greying around the scuff

Our fix Dressed back, rebuilt to the original profile and refinished so the repair is invisible.

Cracks & splits

Usually caused by

  • Potholes or raised drain covers hit at speed
  • A hard kerb strike that shocks the rim
  • Driving on a flat or badly under-inflated tyre

What you will notice

  • A tyre that goes down over a few days with no puncture found
  • A dark hairline running across the rim, often on the inner barrel
  • Damp or bubbled marks tracking along the line

Our fix TIG-welded by hand, machined back and pressure-checked before it goes anywhere near a tyre.

Buckles & vibration

Usually caused by

  • Potholes, sunken drains and speed humps taken hard
  • A kerb hit at an angle rather than square on
  • Big diameters with thin sidewalls and little give

What you will notice

  • Steering shake or a seat wobble, usually from 50mph up
  • A wheel that will not balance however many weights go on
  • Slow, steady pressure loss where the tyre seals to the rim

Our fix Trued on a hydraulic straightening rig, then rebalanced so the vibration goes for good.

Corrosion & lacquer peel

Usually caused by

  • Winter road salt and grit left sitting on the finish
  • Harsh acid wheel cleaners stripping the lacquer
  • Old stone chips and scuffs letting moisture underneath

What you will notice

  • Cloudy patches and lacquer flaking away in sheets
  • Chalky white lines creeping out from the rim edge - "white worm"
  • Air weeping from the bead, or dull, pitted metal

Our fix Stripped back to bare alloy, corrosion treated and fully refinished - not filled and sprayed over.

When a wheel cannot be saved

Not everything is worth repairing. Cracks through a spoke or across the bead seat, badly welded previous repairs and heavily corroded rims can be unsafe to put back on the road. If that is what we find, we will say so and tell you what it would cost to replace instead.
